Youth urged to draw inspiration from Balagtas’ legacy

Key government officials led by Governor Jose Enrique “Joet” Garcia III celebrated Araw ni Balagtas, marking the 237th birth anniversary of Francisco “Balagtas” Baltazar, with a wreath-laying ceremony held yesterday, April 2, at the Hardin ni Balagtas in Orion.

In his message, Governor Garcia emphasized the importance of inspiring the younger generation to reflect on the legacy of Balagtas and the continued relevance of his works in shaping Filipino identity, values, and patriotism. Meanwhile, National Commission for Culture and the Arts Deputy Executive Director for Operations Bernan Joseph Corpuz and Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino Commissioner Arthur Casanova highlighted the timeless lessons embedded in Balagtas’ literary works and emphasized its importance in shaping values and promoting nation-building.

Officials were joined by Balagtas’ descendants, led by Mrs. Maria Corazon Baltazar Guzman Limcumcao, who represented the family during the ceremony.

This year’s celebration carried the theme “Mga Aral ni Balagtas Tungo sa Pambansang Pagkakaisa at Kaunlaran,” emphasizing the role of literature in strengthening national unity and advancing social development.
Known as the “Prinsipe ng Makatang Tagalog”, Balagtas was born in Bulacan in 1788 and is considered as one of the greatest Filipino literary figures. His most renowned work “Florante at Laura” remains a cornerstone of Philippine literature, advocating for patriotism.

Other local officials present in the event included Orion Mayor Antonio Raymundo Jr., Bataan Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Carolina Violeta, Provincial Tourism Officer Danica Lolita Tigas, and representatives from cultural organizations, the education sector, and the local community.
