As if the many uses of bamboo or “kawayan” or “buho” has yet to sink in on the Ayta Magbukun, or they just suspend their creative skills, the University of the Philippines Los Baños College Human Ecology launched last week Project LIKHA Buho: Pakakam’ul Livelihood Hub and Trade Fair.
In its statement, the UPLB said the program is part of Coproduction of Sustainable Nature-Based Livelihood Innovations of Kawayan in human agroforestry system in partnership with Australia Alumni Grants Scheme and indigenous Ayta Magbukun folks.
The program aims to encourage the Ayta Magbukun to create sustainable source of livelihood with the use of bamboo and other agroforestry products using traditional method and modern technology.
Bataan Gov. Joet Garcia expressed amazement on learning about the project as it educates the Aytas on bamboo as a source of livelihood.
A perennial plant belonging to the grass family, bamboo is known for its fast growth. Bamboo is used in making furniture and in building houses. It is also used in installing backyard fence, more particularly in rural areas.
